More Than $1M in Damage After LI Church Fire: Priest

Police on Long Island are investigating a fire that destroyed part of a West Babylon church.

Suffolk County Police say officers were called to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The church's pastor, Rev. Demetrios Kazakis, says he believes an electrical fire was caused by a small refrigerator in the building.

He said that although the flames were quelled quickly, the church suffered severe smoke and water damage.

Kazakis estimates repairs will cost more than $1 million.

He said parishioners have been praying for the strength to fix the community icon.

There were two prior fires at the same church. The last was in 1992.

Police say arson investigators are still probing Tuesday night's blaze.
