Long Branch Police Officer Knocked Unconscious After Catching Suspect

The suspect escaped after the assault

A police officer was beaten and knocked unconscious after catching a suspect in a foot chase, authorities say. The suspect got away.

Michael Monahan was on duty early Tuesday when he saw several people holding flashlights near an abandoned building, the Asbury Park Press reports. The people fled on foot as Monahan got out of his car.

Monahan caught one suspect but was soon struck on the back of the head. He was later found by some other officers who had been trying to contact him over police radio.

Monahan was being evaluated at a hospital and is expected to recover. Further details on his condition were not released.

The New Jersey State Benevolent Association President is offering a $20,000 reward for information on the attack.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Monmouth County Crime Stoppers at 800-671-4400.
