NJ Standoff Over, Armed Suspect in Custody

Police in New Jersey have taken into custody a man who threatened officers with a switchblade and machete when they responded to a call for an assault in Long Branch in Monmouth County.

Police said the 45-year-old suspect assaulted his father during a dispute over groceries, then barricaded himself inside the building where the two live. That's where he threatened officers with a machete and utility knife.

Businesses on Brighton Avenue in the city's West End were ordered by police to shut down Monday evening while responders searched for Powers.

Officers were able to use pepper spray to bring him out.

The suspect, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, was charged with assault and weapons charges.
