Heavily Armed Cops Swarm Roof of New Jersey Elementary School After Apparent Hoax About Armed Intruder

Heavily armed police officers were spotted on the roof of an elementary school in New Jersey Tuesday after a report -- apparently a hoax -- came in about an armed intruder at the building, authorities say.

Chopper 4 captured an extensive law enforcement presence at the Village Elementary School on McCampbell Road in Holmdel, with rifle-wielding law enforcement officers scattered across the roof as others established a perimeter around the building . The school had been put on lockdown around 11 a.m., after officials received a report that someone with a gun was on the roof of the building.

The school was evacuated as a precaution and local and county law enforcement officials performed a "cursory survey" of the building. Even as the evacuations were underway, authorities stressed they did not believe students were in any imminent danger.

No injuries were reported. The source of the threat wasn't immediately clear.

Investigators remained at the scene through Tuesday afternoon to ensure the school was secure, though students were able to return to class. Regular dismissal was expected.
