A livery SUV driver died in a freak midtown accident after he got out of his vehicle to open the doors for two passengers and mistakenly put his car in reverse, authorities said.
The driver put the car in reverse instead of park when he went to help the passengers board and when he jumped back in the vehicle to hit the brakes he inadvertently pressed the gas and got pinned between a parked van and his front door, authorities said.

Emergency crews tried for 20 minutes to resuscitate the 58-year-old driver after the accident on Madison Avenue and East 49th Street shortly before noon Thursday but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
One witness called it a very sad accident.
