About 200 New York City sanitation workers are preparing for a marathon cleanup session this weekend.
The workers will operate dozens of trucks, brooms and blowers on Sunday after the ING New York City Marathon. Last year's 26.2-mile race through the city's five boroughs generated 130 tons of trash.
The Department of Sanitation says the 38,000 runners and 2.5 million spectators expected at this year's race would discard 1.5 million drinking cups and other litter.
Volunteers will place an estimated 84,000 empty 1-gallon water jugs into large plastic bags to be picked up by recycling trucks. The recycling effort started last year. Water jugs in previous years were dumped with the regular trash.
