Car Fire Causes Midday Gridlock at Lincoln Tunnel

A car fire near the Lincoln Tunnel snarled traffic for more than an hour at the crossing Monday afternoon.

Traffic through the New Jersey-bound portion of the tunnel was at standstill until about 2 p.m. after a car went up in flames in the westbound lanes of New Jersey Route 495 near Pleasant Avenue, according to the Port Authority.

There were also rubbernecking delays in the eastbound lanes after the fire broke out.

The Port Authority said shortly before 2 p.m. that things were moving again but residual delays were possible.
