Lawmakers to Vote on Proposal Backing Hudson Rail Project

Lawmakers are expected to urge the federal government to support a recent proposal from Governors Chris Christie of New Jersey and Andrew Cuomo of New York to build a new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River.

The New Jersey Senate is expected to vote on the resolution Thursday.

The governors are seeking a federal grant to fund half the cost of the roughly $20 billion project. The states and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would split the rest.

A Senate oversight committee is also set to review a Port Authority overhaul measure passed by New York lawmakers that creates a rotating chairmanship, among other changes.

It's the latest in a long-running attempt to reform the agency that runs the region's airports, bridges and tunnels.
