Latest Flare-Up Shows Bloomberg's Arrogance

Our mayor is not exactly the most considerate man in town.

When Mayor Bloomberg turned on a disabled man the other day at City Hall many observers were shocked.  Not me.

A City Hall spokesman said Harris was treated just like any other reporter and that he received special consideration when the press corps traveled in a special van to mayoral events.

Many New Yorkers think Bloomberg has done a good job as mayor, but they are not aware of his arrogance and impatience. As he pours many millions of dollars into his campaign for a third term, it's a quality that should be considered.

He may spend many millions on personal contributions to charity, but, at times, this man is hardly charitable or kind to the individuals he meets along the way.

Humility is not a quality that comes easily to Michael Bloomberg. The multi-billionaire is proud of his achievements----but hardly tolerant or considerate to people like Michael Harris, who have to overcome great obstacles to make it in this difficult world.

I have covered nine mayors as a reporter. Certainly Bloomberg is not the most self-effacing. Robert Wagner always reminded himself of the admonition from his father, Senator Wagner, that there were many other guys as well qualified for the job as he was.

David Dinkins would scoff at those who got high and mighty because they were elected to an important job. Dinkins used to say: ''That guy puts on his pants one leg at a time, just like you and me.''

That's certainly true of Mike Bloomberg too-----and he would do well to bear it in mind.

But will he? Perhaps not. After all, humility can't be purchased.. It has to come naturally..
