The final steel girder on the new Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge spanning the Hudson River has been set in place.
The office of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the twin span linking Westchester and Rockland counties was fully connected with structural steel on Friday, which would've been the elder Cuomo's 86th birthday.
The last steel girder on the 3.1-mile-long eastbound span was set near the Rockland side, completing major steel work on the five-year construction project.
The eastbound span is scheduled to open later this year.
All traffic was shifted from the Tappan Zee Bridge onto one side of the new span last year, when the bridge was renamed in honor of the elder Cuomo, governor from 1983 to 1994. He died on Jan. 1, 2015.
