Laptops with Personal Info Stolen from Columbia

About 1,400 current, former and prospective students at Columbia University have been told that their personal information, including Social Security numbers, is vulnerable following a security breach.

The university said information about the students, as well as some current and past employees, was on three password-protected notebook computers that were stolen from a Columbia College office on Jan. 18.

Columbia said in a statement that all the affected students have been notified and been offered identity theft protection services.

A criminal investigation is underway.
