LIRR Will Now Warn Riders of Refund Fee

The change comes after NBC New York reported the story

The MTA has changed course and will begin notifying LIRR riders about a $10 fee on ticket refunds a day after NBC New York reported that many were not aware of it.

NBC New York reported that riders were upset -- and one had hired a lawyer -- about the mandatory $10 processing fee for ticket refunds.

The policy is not clearly advertised, and many riders did not know about the extra cost.

The MTA says now it will start printing the fee on tickets and post decals on ticket machines that alert riders of the fee. Ticket machines will also display the message on touch screens.

Complaints from riders and a story  by NBC New York has led the MTA to “re-double its efforts” to let customers know about a $10 dollar refund fee for any priced ticket on the Long Island Rail Road.

There is no fee for subway Metrocard refunds or for New Jersey Transit.
