Five broken rails caused system-wide Long Island Rail Road delays for hours starting with the morning rush.
Two of the broken rails were in Westbury, one was in Babylon and another was in Great Neck. All were repaired in time for the evening rush.
Even with the repairs, rail officials said customers should expect weather-related delays. The delays, though, were much improved from the 90-minute ones many shivering LIRR customers experienced Friday morning.
LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan says railroad officials need to investigate whether temperatures in the single digits may have contributed to the broken rails. He says cold temperatures are usually a factor in such situations.
One official told NBC 4 New York he had never seen so many rails break in such quick succession.
Eighty-six of the 130 scheduled LIRR trains Friday morning were late, authorities said.
