LIRR Adds Trains to Fire Island on Fridays

The Long Island Rail Road is adding new Friday trains exclusively for Fire Island-bound customers this summer in an effort to reduce crowding on its Montauk branches.

LIRR says it's adding two trains each Friday that are timed to connect with Fire Island ferries at Bay Shore, Sayville and Patchogue, catering specifically to people headed to Fire Island.

Currently, those heading to Fire Island share trains with people heading to the Hamptons and Montauk. The two extra trains should help alleviate crowding.

One of the extra Friday trains is an 8:04 a.m. from Jamaica, arriving at Bay Shore at 8:48 a.m., Sayville at 8:59 a.m. and Patchogue at 9:06 a.m. Riders can get to the Jamaica stop from Penn Station or Atlantic Terminal.

The other additional train is a 12:02 p.m. from Babylon, arriving at Bay Shore at 12:08 p.m., Sayville at 12:19 p.m. and Patchogue at 12:26 p.m. Riders from New York City can catch this via a new "super-express electric" train departing Penn Station at 10:59 a.m. This will stop at Jamaica and Babylon only.

In addition to the Fire Island service, LIRR is adding cars to trains serving North Fork stations en route to and from Greenport.

The summer service begins Friday, July 1 and runs every Friday through Sept. 2.
