No New Finds in L.I. Remains Hunt

No trace of bodies was found Monday during a search along an access road.

State police completed their search Tuesday along a remote stretch of Long Island beach for human remains and other clues in the case of a possible serial killer.

The Robert Moses Causeway, a few miles to the east, was closed for a time while officers, accompanied by canine units and homicide task force members, searched alongside it. In all, at least 50 searchers scoured the terrain near Captree State Park in Suffolk County.

State police officer Frank Bandiero told Newsday the search "yielded negative results" and "nothing of significance" was discovered. It wasn't immediately clear whether a search of the same park or another area would be scheduled for Wednesday. A news briefing is set for 3 p.m. today.

On Monday, police expanded their search to a non-beach area for the first time in connection with the ongoing probe into 10 sets of human remains found near Gilgo Beach since December. No trace of bodies was found Monday during the search of dense underbrush along the access road by Wantagh Parkway.

The area searched Monday leads to Ocean Parkway, where the more than half a dozen sets of remains have been found since December.

Only the first four sets of remains, all discovered late last year, have been identified. They all belong to missing sex workers who had advertised their services on Craigslist and were discovered as police searched for another missing prostitute, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, from Jersey City.

Gilbert has still not been found. Her family held a candlelight vigil near the site where she was last seen to mark the 1-year anniversary of her disappearance over the weekend.

None of the most recently discovered six sets of remains has been publicly identified.
