Long Island Man Faces DWI Charge in Pedestrian's Death

A Long Island man has been arrested for driving drunk after he struck and killed a pedestrian, authorities said Saturday.

According to police, 43-year-old Timothy Burke, of St., James, was driving north on Route 111 around 8:30 p.m. Friday when he hit a pedestrian crossing the road in Smithtown.

The pedestrian, 51-year-old Kenneth Rich, of Smithtown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Burke was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was awaiting arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip.

It was unclear whether Burke had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the charge..
