What to Know

  • The first span of the new Kosciuszko Bridge opened Thursday and Friday morning will be its first rush-hour commute
  • Cuomo announced last month that parts of the old span will be blown up to speed up the demolition
  • An estimated 185,000 vehicles cross the rusting 78-year-old bridge every day. Cuomo says it was built for 10,000

Moms, this New York City bridge light show is for you.

Gov. Cuomo announced Friday that the new Kosciuszko Bridge will light up Sunday in celebration of Mother's Day.

Beginning at dusk, the bridge that links Brooklyn and Queens will "bloom into a splash of springtime color," Cuomo's office says. LED lights will strum across the bridge cables and change to different tempos through the show.

"While no substitute for flowers, this celebration is one small way to thank hard-working moms across New York," Cuomo said.

The new Kosciuszko Bridge opened with fanfare last month, celebrated with a dazzling light show called "The New York Harbor of Lights."

Eventually, seven other MTA-operated bridges will have LED lights that change color and synchronize to music.
