Jury Awards $10M to Man Crushed in NYC Subway Platform Gap

A jury has awarded $10 million to a man who was badly injured when he was crushed in the gap between a New York City subway platform and a train.

The freak accident happened at the Union Square subway station in 2011.

Michael Dion was waiting for a subway when he fell into the gap as a train pulled in. The platform extender then drove into his midsection crushing his abdomen as onlookers watched.

Dion filed a lawsuit accusing the MTA of being negligent for failing to install barriers to prevent such accidents.

Lawyer Jay Dankner said Dion is relieved and hopes Wednesday's verdict will make the agency recognize that passenger safety is their most important priority.

An MTA spokesman said it would file a motion to correct the verdict.
