It's Not too Late to Get a Flu Shot

Needle-shy? Get the vaccine in a nasal spray

The New York City Health Department says the flu season is now in full swing. But it's not too late to be vaccinated.

Your health care provider should have a good supply of flu shots, New York health officials said.  Flu vaccines are also available at no cost at Health Department clinics.  New Yorkers can call 311 for a list of clinic locations.  New York City's Health and Hospitals Corporation also offers free and low-cost flu shots.

Influenza is highly contagious. Young children and older adults are at higher risk of hospitalization and even death.

Symptoms include a fever, dry cough and body aches. They do not include a stomach ache or vomiting.

The department says it's too early to assess the severity of this year's flu season. Outbreaks have occurred as late as May.

The health commissioner, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, says that if you do get the flu, you should cover your cough and stay home to minimize the contagion.
