The death of a 60-year-old Rikers Island inmate who had to be restrained by guards after a physical confrontation was ruled a homicide.
Clarence Mobley died from a lacerated liver and internal bleeding caused by blunt impact to his abdomen, the city medical examiner's office said. It's not clear how many guards were involved in the scuffle or whether they'll face charges.
Authorities have said that Mobley assaulted a corrections officer with a meal tray before being wrestled to the ground by guards as they were taking him to the Anna M. Kross Center on May 3. He was later found dead in a holding cell.
The Kross Center houses the Rikers' Mental Health Center and Methadone Detoxification Unit.
Mobley was 5-foot-7 but weighed only 115 pounds at the time of his death, according to the autopsy report cited by Newsday.
"They beat my father to death," Mobley's daughter, Ayanna Castro, told the paper. "They didn't have to use much force against him. My father was a small man. It wasn't like they were trying to fight a linebacker."
Mobley had been arrested on attempted burglary charges. His death certificate says the injury occurred from "physical restraint following altercation."
The Department of Investigation, police and Bronx district attorney's office are investigating.
