A beach umbrella impaled a woman's chest in Maryland over the weekend, barely seven days after a similar freak accident at the Jersey Shore, authorities say.
The unidentified 46-year-old woman was hurt in Ocean City on the beach at 54th Street Sunday afternoon. Witnesses told police a gust of wind lifted the umbrella before it hit the woman, a police spokesperson told NBC Washington.
The woman was conscious at the time of the accident, an Ocean City spokeswoman said, but no update on her condition was immediately available Monday morning. She was airlifted to a hospital.
Last week, a 67-year-old tourist from London was impaled by a beach umbrella in Seaside Heights. Authorities said part of the umbrella pierced her ankle and was driven completely through due to the force of the wind.
Fire crews had to use a bolt cutter to free the woman. She is expected to be OK.
