Officer Responding to Alarm Finds IHOP on Fire in New Jersey: Police

There’s nothing worse than burnt toast.

An officer rushing to an alarm in New Jersey spotted a roaring fire at an IHOP in Fair Lawn, officials said. The officer called in the fire on Broadway after he eyed the flames leaping from the restaurant just after 12:30 Wednesday morning.

The officer, officials say, was on his way to an alarm going off for a water condition at a different location on Broadway. Firefighters were called in to the second-alarm blaze and extinguished the fire. PSE&G was called in to turn off the building’s gas and electric.

Instagram video shows thick flames spewing from the roof of the IHOP as firefighters sprayed water from above.

It's not clear how the fire started.

The website for the restaurant says it closes at 10 p.m. No injuries were reported.
