Hundreds gathered at the greater Allen AME Cathedral in Queens for the funeral of Shannon Tavarez, the 11-year-old star of the Broadway musical “The Lion King.”
Tavarez was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and died last week after suffering complications from the disease.
The actress received an umbilical-cord blood transplant over the summer after a massive search for a bone marrow donor proved unsuccessful.

Family and friends were overwhelmed with emotion as they shared their memories of the brave little girl who they say affected the lives of many.
Tavarez’s family says they will continue to recruit people to enter the bone marrow registry.
