Head-on Crash Kills 85-year-old Woman, Injures 4 Others

Police say an 85-year-old woman has died and two young children are hospitalized with serious injuries after a head-on crash in New York's Hudson Valley.

State police say Harriet Simpkins of Kinderhook was traveling south on state Route 9 in the Columbia County town of Stuyvesant around 3 p.m. Sunday when she veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Rahmal Spann of Hudson.

Simpkins was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Spann and his three passengers were all transported to Albany Medical Center.

A 9-year-old boy suffered severe arm and leg injuries while a 5-year-old boy is in critical condition with severe head injuries. Spann and a 14-year-old boy suffered only minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
