Homeless Man Charged with Attempting to Rape Woman, 62: NYPD

A homeless man is being charged with attempted rape in connection with an attack on 62-year-old woman in lower Manhattan, police said Saturday.

The victim was approached at about 1 a.m. Friday in the lobby of her building by a man wearing a leather jacket emblazoned with a Batman insignia. The woman fought off the attacker and he fled.

A surveillance camera captured the image of the suspect.

Two officers spotted a man wearing the Batman jacket urinating outside 62 East Broadway and took him into custody.

Police identified the suspect as Rubicel Sanchez, a homeless man.

In addition to attempted rape, Sanchez is being charged with burglary and sexual abuse. There was no indication he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
