Several Homes Near Long Island Soap Plant Evacuated Over Toxic Gas: Police

Several homes near a soap plant on Long Island were evacuated Tuesday over what police described as a "minor" hazmat situation, authorities said.

Police said the evacuations were ordered as a precaution after a possible chemical leak at the Alpak Soap plant on Dixon Avenue in Amityville.

Suffolk police said workers were mixing products when a delay in the mixing process caused a plume of toxic gas to form.

No injuries have been reported.
