Holiday Gift for Transit Union Boss

Toussaint gets promoted three years after screwing NYers

Ex-union boss Roger Toussaint did jail time for crippling the city's transit system in 2005, and now he's getting rewarded with a promotion to become Director of Strategic Planning for the union's international operations, according to the New York Post.

The appointment means that Toussaint will still have some involvement with TWU Local 100's negotiations with the city, which may come as unwelcome news to New Yorkers still steamed after having to hoof it to work in the dead of winter three years ago.

Retailers also suffered as holiday shoppers were homebound during the some of the biggest shopping days of the year.

TWU 100's contract expires in mid-January of 2009, so New Yorkers may want to ask for a comfortable pair of walking shoes from Santa if they want to get through another winter of NYC-style labor negotiations, although Toussaint has promised there will be no repeat of the 2005 strike.

Toussaint did secure a series of salary increases for the union workforce and deter the MTA from enforcing proposed pension contributions from workers as a result of the strike.
