Hit-Run Driver Strikes, Kills 23-Year-Old Man Walking Near Home: Police

A 23-year-old man walking back home from an overnight shift at a local supermarket was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Westchester County, police and family say.

Darryl Chung was hit on South Road in Greenburgh, where he lives, at some point between 11 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday while he was walking on the road, authorities said.

A passing motorist called 911 and police found Chung on the grass in front of a home.

"You drive off and left the person there to die," said family friend June Isioye-Colthierst. "How do you do that?"

Chung worked nights and attended community college during the day to help support his mother, his mother said.

"He was nearly home and this is not fair. They took the life that God gave me," said Chung's mother, Liz. "That's the gift of life that he gave to me, and nobody have the right to take it away."

The heartbroken mother, who didn't want to give her last name, told NBC 4 New York she felt "empty without my son."

"I'm empty. I need him," she said.

Police said they recovered some evidence, though it's too early to tell if the car was speeding when it hit Chung. Authorities are looking for a vehicle with damage to the right front passenger side.

Neighbors said the road is a dangerous one, with no sidewalks, and drivers tend to go as fast as they want.

Neighbor Nicole Davis said, "There are too many kids around here, and cars fly up and down this street every single day. It's ridiculous."

Liz said she needs to know why the driver fled.

"This is my first born," she said. "A parent should never have to bury their child. It should be the other way around."

Police say they want to talk to the driver, and it's possible bad weather was a factor and the driver didn't know they'd struck anyone.
