Hepatitis A Confirmed at New Jersey High School: Health Officials

A case of Hepatitis A has been confirmed at a New Jersey high school.

A worker in the teacher’s cafeteria at Passaic High School was diagnosed with Hepatitis A, according to NorthJersey.com.

The school is providing vaccinations to teachers and staff who ate food from the teacher’s cafeteria between Jan. 15 and Jan. 30, according to the report. Students eat from a different cafeteria.

Health officials said the chance of students contracting the virus is small and that the school was thoroughly disinfected.

Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by a viral infection. The virus is shed in the stool of an infected person and people become infected by eating contaminated food or water. Most recover without treatment.

Symptoms of Hepatitis include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Poor appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Clay-colored stool
  • Yellow discoloration of the skin or whites of the eye
