Hearing Set on Opening Grand Jury Record in Eric Garner Case

A New York judge will hear arguments later this month on whether he should open the secret grand jury record in the Eric Garner chokehold case.

Justice William Garnett set Jan. 29 for the hearing.

The New York Civil Liberties Union and others have asked the court to order the release transcripts and other documents in a probe that ended with the panel declining to indict a New York City police officer. The officer had been accused of placing Garner in an apparent chokehold that contributed to his death.

Authorities in Missouri opted to make the grand jury record public in the aftermath of a similar decision to not charge the officer who shot and killed Michael Brown.

Both cases have inflamed tensions between police and minority communities.
