Hate Crimes Task Force Looks Into Attacks on Asian Women

All were attacked on Lower East Side

The NYPD is trying to stop a string of assaults against women on the Lower East Side -- attacks that are being treated as hate crimes.

Police are not saying exactly why the Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating, but in all five cases, the victims have been Asian women, ranging in age from 50 to 71.

The first attack happened in the early hours of March 31 at Gompers Houses on Pitt Street. Since then, police say three more women have been attacked nearby at Baruch Houses. A fifth victim was assaulted on East Broadway near Montgomery Street.

All of the victims survived.

Police now want to get the attackers off the street before anyone else gets hurt. As of Friday morning, cops had not publicly identified any suspects, but they did release surveillance video that shows people they say they'd like to question.

Authorities ask anyone with information about the attacks to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
