New York state is taking steps to ensure paroled sex offenders don't take advantage of Halloween to commit another crime.
The state said Friday that it is imposing special rules on convicted sex offenders that prohibit them from dressing up in costume or opening their doors to trick-or-treaters.
Parolees are also instructed to remain home Halloween night. The state says parole officers will make home visits to about 2,375 sex offenders currently under supervision.
It's the 10th year such rules have been imposed.
Anthony Annucci, the acting commissioner of the state's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, says the restrictions are intended to ensure that families can "enjoy the festive holiday without fear."
