East Village Home Intruder Tried to Rape Woman: Police

Police are searching for a home intruder who allegedly tried to rape a woman in her Manhattan bedroom early on Saturday.

The 32-year-old victim told police she forgot to lock the door to her East Village apartment near Avenue B and Sixth Street before going to bed, according to sources.

The woman awoke at about 3 a.m. to find the man standing on her bed, police said. He sexually assaulted her, then ran away after she struggled, according to police.

Investigators believe the suspect had been trying to open other doors in the building before he arrived at the victim's apartment, sources said.

Women in the neighborhood say the attack has prompted them to be extra careful about keeping their doors locked.

"I didn't expect things like that to happen, but that really rang my alarm, and I think I should pay more attention to that," said Candy Huang.

Police released a sketch of the suspect (above). Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
