75 Gravestones Vandalized at Upstate New York Cemetery

Dozens of gravestones have been vandalized at a cemetery in New York's Southern Tier.

The damage is believed to have occurred Sunday evening at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery in the Chemung County town of Southport, on the Pennsylvania border 85 miles south of Rochester.

Cemetery officials tell the Star-Gazette of Elmira that about 75 gravestones were knocked over or destroyed.

Cemetery workers are trying to track down the families connected to the damaged burial sites, but officials say some of the families may no longer be around.

Officials say the cost of the damage could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The sheriff's office is working with state police in the investigation.
