Grab a Helmet and Get Ready to Ride

National Bike to Work Day Hits the Streets of NYC

Ready, set, ride.

May is Bike month in the city, and Bike to Work Day rolls in on Friday. The event kicks off bright and early at 7:30 and runs to 10:30 AM. Riders can hit the brakes on their way to work and grab free coffee at the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square and other commute hotspots. A complete list of distribution sites can be found at bikemonthnyc.org.

Bike to Work Day is part of the city's annual celebration of cycling. The Department of Transportation and Transportation Alternatives teams up with city agencies to coordinate activities that showcase bicycling, including 200 rides and workshops.

Cycling in the city has increased in recent years -- 236,000 New Yorkers bicycle on an average day, which is double the number of bikers five years ago.
