Governors Island to Reopen This Summer

State, City pledge operating funds

Although there was some political consternation about the budget, Governors Island is finally in the clear to reopen this summer, the Post and NY1 report.

The island near the southern tip of Manhattan , which the original colonial outpost of what would become New York City , was long used solely for military purposes. But since 2004, it has been open to the public in the summers.

Both the state and city of New York are setting aside $7 million each for this summer's operation of Governors Island , The Post said.

New this summer, bike riders will be able to ride around the entire island as the Southside promenade will no longer be off limits. The island will also get a new Water taxi beach, picnic area and other festivals, NewYorkology reports.

Governors Island will open for the season on May 30.
