Girl, 5, Dies in New York Pickup Truck Crash on Labor Day

The little girl was riding in the truck with her father and sister when it crossed the median

A 5-year-old girl from the Bronx has died after the pickup truck she was riding in crossed over a highway median and struck an oncoming pickup truck in upstate New York, police say.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says the collision happened shortly before 3 p.m. Monday on Route 17 in Monticello.

Sheriff's Sgt. Blake Starner came upon the crash scene and performed CPR on the child, identified as Charkeilys Viera, before she was taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The child's sister, 14-year-old Charleilys Viera, and their father, 50-year-old Carmelo Viera, were flown to Westchester Medical Center. Police say they're in critical condition.

None of the Vieras in the truck was wearing a seat belt, police said.

The family was in the process of moving to Rochester from the Bronx, according to relatives. The girls' mother had recently died.

"She was a beautiful girl, full of life," said the Charkeily's grandfather, Carmelo Viera. "She was growing up so good. Happy."

A Long Island couple and their two teenage daughters were in the other pickup truck and were treated for injuries. They're expected to be OK.
