Girl, 14, Dead in NJ Shooting; 2nd Teen Hospitalized

A 14-year-old girl was killed and another girl was wounded when shots rang out in New Jersey Saturday night, authorities said.

It's unclear what sparked the shooting on Clinton Street in Paterson, which was reported around 11:25 p.m. A city official identified the slain girl as Nazerah Bugg.

The wounded teen, identified only as a 15-year-old girl, remained hospitalized in stable condition Sunday, prosecutors said. Further information on the teen's injuries was not disclosed.

No arrests have been made.

A memorial was set up where the victim was killed. Mourners scribbled condolence messages and tributes to the teen on posters.

Friends and family said Bugg was an avid basketball player who was set to play this season at Kennedy High School and had the potential to play professionally one day. They described her as a good girl who was always smiling.

The Paterson public school system said counselors would be available.

"We offer our deepest sympathy to the family who lost their child and we are hopefully that the other student will fully recover," the district said in a statement.
