Cooling Unit Falls, Kills Man

A 38-year-old man was crushed to death Tuesday by a large cooling unit that fell from a tractor-trailer in the Bronx.

The unit was attached to the chain of a crane, which broke off, police said.

A witness said he heard the cable snap.

"They got a new cable out and they tried to lift it back up but it was too late," said Joseph Contreras, who described the victim, Tristan Mananghaya of Jersey City, N.J. as a "hard-working man."

The equipment fell on Mananghaya just outside Bronx Lebanon Hospital at about 10:50 a.m. He was taken inside and later pronounced dead.

"He's out here working hard, and for that to happen to him and his family to go through that loss now, it's crazy," said Contreras.
