Slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk is being honored posthumously by a network of gay and lesbian organizations on his native Long Island.
The Long Island Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Services Network will honor Milk at its third Equality Awards Gala on April 18.
Milk was born in Woodmere in Suffolk County and graduated from Bayshore High School in Nassau County.
He eventually moved to San Francisco, where he became the country's first openly gay man to hold public office when he was elected to the city's Board of Supervisors in 1977.
In November 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were fatally shot by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned.
Last month, the biographical film "Milk" received two Oscars.
