Block Evacuated in Maywood After Leak at Gas Station: Police

A leak during a delivery at a gas station in Maywood on Sunday spilled between 100 gallons to 200 gallons of gasoline on the road and in the storm drains, officials said.

Police evacuated the street in back of the station and the nearby block.

A tanker truck was making a delivery to a Delta gas station at West Passaic Street and Palmer Avenue when the gasoline leaked onto the ground, Maywood police said.

Once the gas entered the storm drains, it traveled about six blocks, said Maywood Fire Chief Chris Tuttle.

Firefighters stopped the leak and put a foam on the ground so the fumes wouldn't ignite, Tuttle said.

The Bergen County Hazmat team, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and others responded, Tuttle said.

He said firefighters were waiting for a clean-up company to come and mitigate the effects of the spill.
