Gas Leak at Queens Building Prompts Several Evacuations

A gas leak at a mixed-occupancy building in Queens prompted several evacuations, street closures and transit changes throughout the morning Monday as authorities investigated.

The FDNY said it responded to the building Liberty Avenue between Lefferts Avenue and 118th Street after getting a call about a gas smell there shortly before 7:45 a.m. Con Edison and National Grid crews also responded.

That building and several nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. City buses were told to avoid the area, and service on the A subway line was bypassing a nearby stop as the investigation continued.

No injuries were reported, and the leak was determined to be under control by noon.
