Death of Chronically Ill 5-Year-Old Boy Investigated by Police: Sources

The death of a 5-year-old chronically ill boy in a hospital last month is being investigated by police, law enforcement sources confirm.

Garnett Spears died at Westchester Medical Center last month, and his mom, Lacey Spears, reportedly described his final days and previous illnesses on Facebook.

Sources said her Facebook postings are part of the investigation.

Garnett lived with his mother at the Fellowship Community complex in Chestnut Ridge, a self-described social service care community licensed by the state Department of Health.

"We're grieving the loss of this little guy," said administrator Matt Uppenbrink. "The whole community is."

Before Garnett died, the hospital told police that his sodium levels were suspiciously high. That is part of the reason why his death is being investigated.

Sources said the mother has left the state.

"It's inconceivable," Uppenbrink said of the investigation into whether the boy's mother was deliberately making her son ill. "That's not the Lacey we know."

"From everything that we saw, she loved him very much."
