Crash Shuts Down Garden State Parkway During Rush Hour

Traffic was at a standstill after the crash near Exit 135

A portion of the Garden State Parkway was closed during the Thursday evening rush hour after a crash at exit 135.

The parkway was shut down in both directions at the exit in Clark, N.J., and reopened by about 5:15 p.m., with major delays.

New Jersey State Police Sgt. Brian Polite said an accident involving at least two vehicles occurred around 4 p.m. Polite said at least one person suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital in Newark.

Traffic was backed up for at least 20 miles on the southbound side of the parkway, between Clark and Bloomfield, as of Thursday evening. It was at a standstill in some places, with some drivers out of their cars and standing on the roadway.

Polite said a preliminary investigation indicates that one vehicle may have rear-ended another in the southbound lanes near Interchange 135.
