Hail, gusty winds and briefly heavy downpours are expected

Hail, gusty winds and briefly heavy downpours are possible throughout parts of the tri-state later today.

The northwest part of our area could start to see severe weather by mid-afternoon, and then storms are likely in the city by as early as 5 p.m.

Possible effects include downed trees, scattered power outages and some ponding of water in poor drainage areas. Widespread flooding is not expected.

Storms are predicted to weaken across Nassau and Suffolk counties later in the night.
