Teen Charged With Murder After Fight, Shooting at NJ Church Lot: Authorities

A New Jersey teen has been charged with murder after an altercation with a 17-year-old boy in a church parking lot that authorities say left him with stab wounds and the boy dead.

Dequan Rogers, 19, is accused of shooting and killing Joell Burton in the lot on Somerset Street in Franklin after the two got in an argument that turned physical Monday evening, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors say that around the time of the fight, police received separate calls about a shooting in the church lot and a man who had been stabbed a few blocks away.

Police responded to both scenes, finding Burton with a gunshot wound to the chest outside the church and Rogers with a stab wound to the upper body and a cut on his arm.

Authorities say Burton was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

Rogers was also taken to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He was in stable condition Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the two knew each other, but it’s not exactly clear what sparked the fight. It’s not clear if weapons were recovered at either scene.

Rogers is charged with first-degree murder and several weapons charges. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
