Gas Thief Drags NJ Station Attendant: Police

A gas station attendant was dragged several hundred feet by a driver who allegedly tried to speed off after getting a fill-up, authorities said.

An attendant at a Sunoco station on Lemoine Avenue in Fort Lee fell and caught his arm on the window of an SUV as its driver tried to take off without paying for $36 in gas, authorities said.

The attendant was then dragged for about a quarter mile before being flung off, authorities said.

Avi Paryent said he saw the attendant hanging on the side of the SUV and jumped into his own car to save the man. He chased the vehicle down Lemoine Avenue all the way to a Palisades Parkway ramp, where the attendant fell off, dazed about what had happened.

"He didn't know exactly what happened," Paryent said. "He was in shock."

The attendant was taken to an area hospital afterward with minor injuries, according to Fort Lee police. His cousin told NBC 4 New York that the man has injuries to his knee and arm.

No arrests have been made in the case, which was first reported by The Bergen Record.
