Fordham Downsizes Controversial Lincoln Center Expansion

Fordham University's plan to build a wall of high-rises around its Upper West Side campus has run into a roadblock of opposition from irate neighbors, and now, the Times reports, the school is extending an olive branch.

A modified plan that has received "measured approval" from some community groups will be announced at a news conference today, laying out some tweaks to the desired build-out of Fordham's superblock, from 60th to 62nd Streets between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. The Times reports:

The new proposal involves cutting 206,000 square feet of space from the original expansion plan by moving some classrooms underground, devoting less space to parking and setting buildings farther from the curb. It also requires Fordham to consult with the community as the plans progress.

Will the new deal appease the locals? It's a start! Bossy Community Board 7, which rejected the old proposal 31-0, wants the buildings along Amsterdam Avenue to be further reduced in height, as well as something stronger than just an advisory vote.
