Flags will be flown at half-staff on New York state government buildings to honor a sailor from the Hudson Valley who was killed when the USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker off Singapore.
Gov. Cuomo says flags will fly at half-staff on Tuesday to honor Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Corey George Ingram, of Poughkeepsie, and the other nine sailors killed in the Aug. 21 collision.
Ingram's family, who had held out hope he'd be found alive even after the Navy said it was suspending the search and rescue effort, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon thanking supporters for their love and prayers.
"Corey was a wonderful son, brother and Sailor. He truly loved his family, the Navy, and his shipmates. We are incredibly proud of him and his nine years of service to our country," the Ingram family statement said. "We will miss him immensely and we are so very thankful for the 28 wonderful years we had together."
"We ask everyone to keep the families and friends of those affected by this terrible tragedy in your thoughts and prayers," the statement continued.
The crash ripped a gash in the McCain's hull, flooding crew berths and machinery and communications rooms.
The Navy said on Monday that divers had recovered the remains of all 10 sailors who went missing last week.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
