Part of First Avenue Still Closed After Facade Collapse

A portion of First Avenue on the Upper East Side remains closed to pedestrians and vehicles after a construction accident sent a hail of bricks and concrete plummeting 35 stories from a Manhattan high-rise building facade Monday night. 

Police say a freeze remains in place on First Avenue between 62nd and 64th streets until futher notice. They say they'll reevaluate at 8 a.m. Thursday. 

The accident Monday appeared some type of accident related to repointing, which involves renewing the external part of mortar joints in masonry construction. It caused the facade of the Upper East Side building on East 64th Street to crumble. No injuries were reported.
